                                The fluctuating employment rate in BC .

The following bar chart shows the average unemployment rate of full time students in BC over the last 5 years. The 5 year time span basically highlights the pre, during and post-covid period.

The data has been taken from: Statistics Canada. Table 14-10-0021-01  Unemployment rate, participation rate, and employment rate by type of student during school months, monthly, unadjusted for seasonality

As seen in the graph, the unemployment rate peaked during 2020 which was the covid period. Later it declined to 12,4 in 2021 to 8.7 in 2022 and id did peak a bit in 2023. In the article by Victoria News, it talks about the increased unemployment rate as it rose by 0.3 in 2023 and for 2024 its until February, so its hard to predict for the rest of year.

Question:

Why is the unemployment rate fluctuating when it comes to full time students in BC?

Link and Brief Summary:

As stated in the article by Victoria News: B.C. unemployment up slightly despite creation of 74,000 new jobs, mentioned many factors that eventually gave rise to the unemployment rate and increasing population was one of them. This article answers the above mentioned question very precisely as the no of students increased in the province causing the jobs to be less to accommodate everyone.

Considering the remarks I have increased the reference period to over 5 years, as it draws a broader picture for the viewers. It also shows that how did the employment differ before, during and after covid as the circumstances in all these cases were different. As in 2020 which was the Covid period the unemployment rate increased to 17.3% and it eventually declined in the post covid period when situations became normal. The minister stated  “slow and steady growth” ,"as B.C. added 74,000 new jobs in 2023 for the fourth-best rate in the country".

    hi jasmine well talking about your bar chart looks attractive in different vibrant another thing this issue of employment is also a major concern concern for the students these days so you really did a great job tackling the current affair in your blog post . very well done

    Hi Jasmine! I really enjoyed reading your data update 3.I like the way to made your graph with a legend so it makes it readers to read. I think it would be cool if you if you compared the unemployment rate of each province and compare them each year. (If you have that data.) Good job!

    Hi Jasmine, great update! I think it would be nice to compare the unemployment rate of full-time students to students who are engaged in part-time studies? I also think your lead could be more descriptive from what you found in your data. Overall, great job!

Data Visualization Analysis: Assignment 1

In all these bar charts and line graphs the data allocation has been done reasonably well with proper color schemes and points on the graphs to easily navigate the viewer. In Figure 3 with the data being so precise the data is closely packed as there is less difference. So, the use of points on the graphs helps us in understanding the data easily. But when the data is constantly changing it becomes hard to keep up with the difference at every step. Therefore, the variations in data can be highlighted more accurately because if the line graphs aren’t clicked the data isn’t shown which eventually becomes hard to understand for the readers. The division of years and months are a bit hard to differentiate as there is a constant change in every step and it cannot be tracked. The gap between 1990-1991 there have been so many changes, but the month wise segregation cannot be seen. Secondly, the use of different colors makes the data stand out and it feels more appalling for the viewers. The ...
